Data equity refers to the practice of ensuring fairness, inclusivity, and accountability in how data is collected, analyzed, and used in the communities we serve. For frontline responders, equitable data collection becomes imperative as data increasingly shapes decisions about emergency response, health care access, resource allocation, and linkages to care. A growing community of practitioners committed to advancing community health recognizes that data collection is not inherently neutral: it can reflect the assumptions and the biases of those who gather and interpret it, which can unintentionally reinforce existing inequities, particularly in marginalized communities. Once we have accurate data, using the data to understand where disparities occur and why is the next step. And when we know why disparities happen, we can act to address the key drivers of this inequity. This process of collecting data, using the data, implementing change to address what we observe, and then continually monitoring is a cycle.
